However, it turned out that the restaurant featured in the show was fake, and this dish was simply a creation for entertainment. Despite that, the idea of combining ice cream with spicy tteokbokki seemed so unique and delicious that I decided to try making it myself. 

This Ice Cream Tteokbokki recipe brings a creamy and slightly sweet twist to the traditional Korean dish. Ice Cream Tteokbokki

Ingredients:

  • Essential Ingredients:
    • 1 stalk green onion (chopped) 
    • 2 servings of rice cakes (tteok) (approximately 25 bite-sized pieces) 
    • 2 servings of fish cakes (approximately 15 bite-sized pieces) 
    • A little bit of oil 500ml water 
    • Vanilla or milk-flavored ice cream (cone or tub, depending on preference)
  • Tteokbokki Sauce: 
    • 4 tbsp Korean red pepper powder (gochugaru) 
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce 
    • 2 tbsp oyster sauce 
    • 2 tbsp Korean red pepper paste (gochujang) 
    • 100ml water 
    • Minced garlic to taste

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Rice Cakes 

Soak the rice cakes in water for about 10 minutes to soften them. This will ensure that they cook evenly and have a chewy texture. 

Step 2: Chop the Green Onion 

Cut the green onion lengthwise in half, then slice it into thin pieces. This will be used to enhance the flavor of the oil in the next step. 

Step 3: Make Green Onion Oil 

Heat a pan with a little bit of oil and stir-fry the green onion until it becomes fragrant. This step helps to infuse the dish with a rich, savory aroma. 

Step 4: Add Water 

Pour 500ml of water into the pan and bring it to a simmer. 

Step 5: Create the Tteokbokki Sauce 

Add 4 tbsp of gochugaru, 2 tbsp of soy sauce, 2 tbsp of oyster sauce, 2 tbsp of gochujang, 100ml of water, and minced garlic to the pan. Stir well to ensure everything is combined. 

Step 6: Add Ice Cream 

Cut the ice cream in half and add it to the simmering sauce. Stir it gently to let the ice cream melt and incorporate into the sauce, giving it a creamy texture.


Notes:

  • If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of gochugaru and gochujang in the sauce. 
  • If you don't have oyster sauce or minced garlic, you can omit them. Alternatively, you can add beef or bone broth powder to enhance the umami taste. 
  • For a sweeter version, feel free to add a small amount of sugar, but keep in mind that the ice cream already contains sugar. 
  • Toppings & Additions: Try adding boiled eggs, sausages, instant noodles, glass noodles, or cheese for extra texture and flavor. 
  • If you don't want to make the sauce from scratch, you can use a store-bought tteokbokki sauce and simply mix in the ice cream for a twist.
